HGA’s Owensboro Health Regional Hospital Wins National ACEC Engineering Excellence Award
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — HGA Architect and Engineers has won a National Recognition Award in the American Council of Engineering Companies 2014 Engineering Excellence Awards competition for Owensboro Health Regional Hospital in Owensboro, KY.
“We are proud that the national American Council of Engineering Companies recognized Owensboro’s engineering excellence,” said Kurt Spiering, AIA, ACHA, vice president and principal with HGA. “The hospital combines planning, architecture and engineering innovations to help Owensboro achieve its mission of providing exemplary patient care.”
Completed in June 2013, the 780,000-square-foot replacement hospital includes a nine-story bed tower, three-story diagnostic & treatment building, emergency department, women’s center, heart center and outpatient diagnostics center on a 162-acre campus.
The structural system resolved complex challenges involving high-seismic conditions near the New Madrid and Wabash Valley Seismic zones, poor soil conditions and curvilinear building massing. Additionally, the team utilized Integrated Project Delivery to share risk between architect, contractor and owner and realize more than $5 million worth of savings, which were reinvested in building, structural systems and patient amenities.
The Engineering Excellence Awards honor exceptional achievement in engineering. The winners will be recognized at a black-tie EEA Gala April 29 at The Grand Hyatt Washington Hotel in Washington, D.C.
